Mediterranean Summer Skills Seminars
The Mediterranean Advanced Skills Seminar complements the Mediterranean Seminar Summer Skills Seminars, our intensive four-day hands-on introductory seminars designed to provide a foundation in technical skills or an introduction to topics and/or methodologies relevant to Mediterranean Studies. They are offered remotely (via Zoom or Teams) in live, synchronous sessions held over the course of the spring or fall academic seasons. They are open to graduate and undergraduate students, scholars of all ranks, professionals and members of the public from across the world. Unlike the Summer Skills Seminars, Advanced Skills Seminars are intended not for beginners but for alumni/ae of the Summer Skills Seminars or others who have already mastered the basics of the subject in question. These courses are intended to reinforce the basics and cultivate greater proficiency, as well as an opportunity to advance individual projects. Advanced Skill Seminars include ten two-hour sessions that take place across the semester in quetion for a total of 20 hours.
Tuition is on a sliding scale relating to academic status and rank. Participants will be provided with a diploma confirming their completion of the course. Scholars and students who are citizens of and reside in low-GDP countries may be eligible for a partial tuition discount.

The course will focus primarily on the collections of the Arxiu de la Corona d’Aragó in Barcelona, but participants who work on any medieval archive are welcome. Participants will have the opportunity to bring in documents they are reading or editing for the participants to work on. After a brief review of the basics of rading archival documents in Latin (format, abbreviations, names, dates, and places) we will spend the bulk of the course reading and editing documents, as well as discussing research techniques and strategies
Instructor: Brian A. Catlos
Prerequisites: This course is open to scholars and students who have completed the Mediterranean Seminar Summer Skills Seminar in Reading Archival Latin, have similar training, or who have a demonstrated experience reading medieval archival documents in Latin and have a demonstrated intermediate or higher reading knowledge of the Latin.
